When your neck and shoulders feel tight, it’s easy to think the problem lives there.
But most of the time, the real key to release lies deeper — in your rib cage 🫁
Your rib cage is the center of your breathing system.
How it’s shaped and how it moves determines how much space your diaphragm has to work, how well your core and pelvic floor coordinate, and how easily your upper body can relax.
That’s why something as simple as five mindful breaths can create an instant shift in tension.
When the rib cage is stiff, lifted unevenly, or flared forward, your breath becomes shallow and upper-chest dominant.
Your neck and shoulders are forced to help with breathing — which leads to:
Tightness and fatigue
Limited movement
Postural strain
But when the rib cage is aligned and mobile, your diaphragm can expand downward easily.
Breathing becomes deeper and calmer, and your neck and shoulders are freed from doing extra work.
Gently place both hands around the lower part of your rib cage — fingers on the sides, thumbs toward your back.
Take a slow breath in and out.
Notice:
Is one side rounder and the other more sharp?
Does the front of your rib cage stick out?
Is your infrasternal angle wider or narrower than 90°?
Does the rib cage expand front, side, and back equally?
Which side moves more easily when you breathe?
Even this tiny awareness practice shows you where your body might be holding restriction.
A restricted rib cage doesn’t just limit your breath — it changes how your whole body coordinates.
When the rib cage moves better:
The diaphragm can work fully
The deep core engages naturally
The pelvic floor supports without squeezing
The neck and shoulders stop overworking
This is why so many people feel their neck and shoulder tension melt away after just five breaths done with the right structure.
